For those who know Laurie Stack, it should come as no surprise that she’s taken up farming with Barnston Island Vegetables. Growing up in a family of six kids in Ontario, her family had a large vegetable garden that produced food for the family. Not only was it needed, but it just made sense. Now grown up and married, Laurie naturally began by farming in her backyard, with the garden expanding every year. At the end of 2014 her family moved from their Newton home to a farm on Barnston Island, part of the ALR. Laurie launched herself headfirst into farming in the 2015 season, starting up the farm and selling her popular produce at the Surrey Urban Farmers Market. She chose to sell bere because of the geographic proximity to her farm and because of the urban aspect, where many city people don’t have access to gardens.
